Doreen, thank you for writing this article. Mary, thank you for posting it, especially today. Like so many others who have responded to this article, I awoke this morning and could not get myself to get out of bed. When I finally did get up, I couldn't bring myself to turn on a radio or TV. I did watch a bit, tonight, but with the sound off--I just couldn't stand any more of the veneration and worship. I suppose I had hoped this day just wouldn't come, that somehow, we'd go from Monday to Wednesday with no Tuesday in between. I came very late in the evening to CE, and I want you to know that THIS article on THIS day has lifted my spirits. Thank you.

mfernand71, may I ask where you've been for the last 2 years? Mr. Obama has openly declared his support for FOCA, for PFA, for "redistribution of wealth", for deliberately putting the coal industry out of business to force us to go to "green energy" (like we all have his income and can afford it!), wants to "open" the military to homosexuals (and many "straights" have threatened to leave the service if he does), insists on nationalizing business and industry and that's only the "cream" off the top! There is nothing that traditional Catholics support that he is supportive of, and everything that is unthinkable for us is on his "progressive" agenda! For a man who claimed he wanted to create unity and put an end to divisness, he is the most divisive man in the world!

For us, a "good Catholic" is one who accepts and lives the decisions of Christ as given us through the Magisterium of the Church. We "must obey Christ rather than man".

Yes, we are--today--still free to practice our faith in this country. A growing number of us (and I am relieved to read so many who feel as I do!) believe that that freedom will not be ours much longer: hence, the need to fight, suffer, and, probably, die. THAT's where we get our feeling of being aliens.

I read the article around 8:00 PM, and I also read most of the comments. I got up early and watched TV for a couple of hours in the morning, and a couple of hours in the early evening. I felt good about many things I heard and saw. I cannot understand where all this concept of feeling as an alien in this country came from. This country is still a free country and we can practice any religion we believe in. Why the need to get ready for battle? The language used in the article is not the language I expect from good Catholic, and maybe, just maybe I don't know what the author thinks what a good Catholic is.
Articles like this one scared me. Is there any foundation to the accusations made to Obama?

Great article, Doreen!

For the first time since Roe v. was passed (as a result of a dishonest public relations campaign, mind you), the power is concentrated in only two individuals -- Barack and Michelle. If their hearts were touched by God's word and those two changed their opinion on the use of abortion to abdicate responsibility for one's actions, the whole issue could indeed CHANGE (Change you could believe in...).

Pray for them both. Storm heaven for them to be converted to Christian thinking! They both appear to be blind currently. There IS hope. God works in mysterious ways.

Mary,

CE is blessed that you are editor, esp based on your post to Joanspage. Joanspage, God bless you.

It is so tragic; Pres. Obama could be SUCH a powerful force for change if only his eyes could see--imagine him as an impassioned pro-life president. Look at the beautiful example he could be. Remember--Saul was breathing "murderous threats"onthe way to Damascus. And--isn't he one of the few politicians who has an intact, beautiful family, no whispers of infidelity, really seems to honor and love his wife and daughters--there is so much potential here.

We have to be more faithful in prayer and more creative in our pro-life efforts. For example, how often have we prayed for our medical professionals who are under fire, or for the conversion of OB/GYN's to non-contraceptive practices, or for doctors who are under pressure to euthanize?? If we prayed and practically supported them as much as we are beginning to pray for vocations to the priesthood, we might make some serious gains in that scientific field.

Anyway--God bless America. We are not finished fighting the good fight, and I am not ready to give up on this beloved country.

The Church has been asleep for way too long, but I'm filled with hope knowing that She is waking up. The Bishops declared that abortion is a direct attack on the Church. We cannot roll over and except this attack any longer. Also, if our spineless leaders sign the Freedom of Choice act, we as the Church will have to stand up. We will have no more excuses. This is an interesting age and it will be known in the history books. Men of God, get off your fat behinds, things our going to get interesting.

Oh, not at all joanspage, not looking to have a fight. We are all in this together. And we don’t all have kids and a good income, believe me. There is a wide spectrum of life circumstances represented here.

I appreciate your sharing your health problems. (Kent, come on — that wasn’t to make an argument; it was to make a connection.) You are facing some very serious challenges. We have an article coming next week that is one of the best things I have ever read about how a person’s health challenges can be transformed into encouragement for others.

Joanspage, you are part of the body because God placed you here. You were part of the body before you had first communion, when you were baptized. And if God has seen fit to allow for the rest of the communions you have to be spiritual ones, that does not in anyway lessen you being a part of us.

We try very hard to represent diverse opinions on those issues where diversity does not cause one to stray from Church teaching. In fact, on economics I am in the process of trying to find some contributors that can discuss distributism. (I’m sure the fur will fly over that!) You were 100% right when you say that conservative does not equal Catholic.

You don’t have to seek a way to fit in joanspage, the responsibility is ours to show and tell you that you are valued, not only by God which you already know, but by your brothers and sisters in Christ. I hope you will stick around and contribute to our discussions. Thanks for being here.
