Right on once again, Mark. Thanks for exposing this continuing pattern for what it really is.

This all puts me in mind of a first century follower of Jesus who spent 3 years in his company, dare we call him devout, while all the while stealing from the money purse. Seems he came to a bad end.

Eckhart Tolle is an expert on menses? I mean, WHO KNEW? (Does he have any Gaia wisdom about male pattern baldness?)

And, sirs and madams, I am PROUD to be as humble as I am - not to mention, bordering on devout!

Devout was little old Mrs. Gemini (pronounced "ja-mee'-nee", as with 'e's with no 'i' sounds). After any Mass, she would go through her tiny old prayerbook, and kiss all the holy-card pictures, and use them to remind herself what her intentions for prayers were. Sometimes, my late wife, Sharon, would join her in the kissing and the Hail Marys and all - and we'd be a half-hour getting out of the church. Once, Sharon came to me with tears in her eyes and told me 'pray for Gary' - it seems that one grandson was in some kind of trouble. (Could the dear old lady really have had a [surely rare] 'Saint Gary' in among her bulging pile?)

The first rule of true spiritual devoutness is 'pray for everyone and everything.' Then, when you get up tomorrow, start all over again. One just cannot find time to walk out of Mass, or give a XXX film (???!!!) demonstration.

Oprah promotes Tolles book, gives classes on it and if you really want to get some jollies, go and read their 'New earth' message board for a few minutes.

creepy stuff.

This use of the word devout was made official more than 50 years ago by the Kinsey Report. Kinsey defined his terms carefully, with malice aforethought. "Devout Catholic was for him, BY DEFINITION, someone who rarely missed Mass on Sunday. He also had two other categories, which I've forgotten, for Catholics (or people who called themselves Catholics) that fell short of this standard. But you can look it up--go to any library that has a copy of the Kinsey report.
This was back in the days when Mass attendance was much, much higher than it is now, because children were taught in Catholic schools that missing Mass on Sunday without a serious reason was a mortal sin.
Is it any wonder that Kinsey's statistics were so skewed? and so influential? His statistics just for "devout" Catholics were eye-popping.
Some historian should delve into whether (1) Kinsey was relying on some other "authority" for his definition or (2) the mainstream media have simply been using Kinsey's term since the report came out, under the impression that Kinsey's use of the term was the right one.

This is a great post.

I did not do too well in the riddle. I thought I saw Madonna in there.

Who was Pius XXIII?

As well as all Catholics being devout, all nuns are holy, all scholars are eminent, all doctors are wonderful and all scientists are brilliant.

I always am uplifted and encouraged my Mark's sound and balanced Catholicism.

I give this article a 100% positive review!

There, now just like Eckhart Tolle's book was chosen as the "Best Answer" (click the above link and you will see that it was universally chosen as the best since 100% of the readers who rated it said so--no matter that only 1 (one) vote was cast!
