When people vote for Obama out of that rationalization, it reminds me of those who profess good works while actually avoiding them by passing the buck to the government. We need less government, not more...let local organizations and the individuals in them deal with the problems Obama claims he will solve with more goverment. Perhaps your friend should read a little Alexi de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", especially the part where he talks about mitigating institutions.

As for the Catholic press, it seems to be like the goverment...people get the press and goverment they deserve...

"...many people spend too much time avoiding evil without giving proportionate attention to doing good. If we are committed to good works, avoiding evil becomes more achievable..."

This is almost exactly what my Catholic colleague told me justifying why he is voting for Barak Obama.

"Look," he said, "there are going to be over a million abortions in the USA next year no matter which guy wins. Voting the Republican instead of teh Democrat does not save one single baby. But Obama promises much more in other forms of social action for the common good than McCain does. These actions will make reducing abortions more achievable."

Almost sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

I appealed to Supreme Court Justices appointments to argue that McCain is the only one who offers our country a chance of appoint Justices willing to reject the twisted logic the Supreme Court used to rule in Roe v. Wade. Shadows of penumbras and all...
