Jordan Sparks and Honesty

Over the past several years, I have noticed that there is no television program quite as popular as American Idol. In fact, it has become so engrained in the psyche that even many Europeans equate what happens on that show with what America is all about.I myself would never make such a broad assumption, but in American Idol winner Jordin Spark’s case, I am so gratified that I nearly burst a button when I think about it.

Jordin is a lovely young woman with a superb singing voice as well as a moral code that defines her for one and all to see. As we learned recently, her appearance on the MTV “Video Music Awards” show raised awareness and some pretty ugly hackles as well.

In response to the rude, vulgar comments made by “Video Music Awards” host Russell Brand in his derisive rant about promise rings, Jordin took the high road and is quoted as saying,

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

I should probably back up a moment and explain to you that a promise ring is also known as a purity ring in the Christian community. It is defined as “a symbol of a promise made between parent and child regarding chastity and/or abstinence from substance use. A purity ring may be a symbol of religious or moral conviction.”

With a full understanding of this, it is easy to see why Sparks became concerned and felt deep in her heart that she could not let the offensive comments made by Brand go unanswered.

I enjoyed reading, on the People magazine web site, that not everybody is laughing at Brand. I felt a certain encouragement at realizing that a national magazine of the stature of People had implied that that Sparks’ comments were worthy of respect, even if not totally agreed with. That is a step in the right direction!

On her own web site, Sparks displays a healthy pride about wearing the purity ring, and it just seems natural for me to commend this type of courage in today’s sexually saturated society. God bless her for being honest and faithful to God first, not to the headlines or to those in the entertainment industry who are anything but pleased with her comments.

She is on the cutting edge of what is going to bring the nation out of the culture of death and into the light of God’s truth. For whether our opponents like it or not, the news is telling everyone what is true and what is most healthy for young and old alike.

As prominent psychiatry professor Philip Ney said recently in a commentary, “There is no particular need for ‘sex education.'” He also made some points which vindicate the statements and actions of young men and women like Jordin Sparks and the Jonas Brothers.

Dr. Ney’s detailed, point-by-point analysis exposes the truth about the integrity of the human person and why sex education has failed abysmally, and has wreaked havoc with our youth and parents who were taught it in school. The rest of his points are likewise worth repeating:

  • Sex education inhibits pair bonding.
  • The more sex education, the more sexual self-consciousness.
  • The more sex education, the more sexual activity.
  • The earlier the sex education, the younger children explore sex and try various sexual techniques.
  • In preventing disease and pregnancy, sex education has been a failure.
  • The idea of “safe sex” has failed.
  • The reliance on condoms has been dangerously misleading.
  • There is nothing in sex education that cannot be part of a more effective general health education.
  • The sex industry profits from sex education.
  • Sex education creates mind-absorbing conflicts and preoccupations.
  • Sex education tends to result in mental images that interfere with the appreciation of nature and art.
  • No sex education teaches the beauty and hazards of pair bonding.
  • Many kinds of sex education, including “chastity” education, leave a young person with the impression that any kind of sex except vaginal intercourse is okay when it is not.

I am extremely grateful to Dr. Ney for providing us with the truth about sex education at a time when Planned Parenthood is doing all it can to destroy souls and minds with lies and deception that are difficult to even discuss.

Tell everyone about Dr. Ney’s column, and share it with educators, school principals and anyone else you feel would benefit from an accurate assessment of sex education/instruction.

If you have time, let Jordin Sparks and the Jonas Brothers know how much you appreciate the positive example they are setting for today’s young people.

And finally, get online and listen to American Life League’s beautiful Marie Hahnenberg as she explains to ABC’s Dr. Timothy Johnson and Oregon Planned Parenthood CEO David Greenberg why sex education is dehumanizing our young people.

It is always a plus to be able to share positive news with you. Such is my message to you today. Celebrate life, and be grateful for heroic people such as these!
