What a wonderful article. I love the perspective. Going without a meal or heat is unthinkable to most of us. Yet, look what faith accomplished. You could just feel the graces and holiness that comes from such experiences. Far more beneficial than a large bank account.

Thank you for your heartfelt comments and words of encouragement! What joy there is in solidarity, knowing that we've carried the same burden our dear Lord experienced during His earthly life. The fear of poverty is so ingrained in our hearts and minds by a world that says "yes...you can have it all and you should!" What a devastating lie, one that has ensnared the soul of society, one that tells the young couple "you really can't afford to have a baby right now...how will you ever be able to give your child what everyone else has?" Trust in God...there's where we discover true wealth! St. Francis reveals the wisdom of Heaven in the following prayer:

Let us desire nothing else
let us wish for nothing else
let nothing else please us and cause us delight
except our Creator and Redeemer and Saviour,
the One True God, Who is the Fullness of Good,
all good, every good, the true and supreme Good;
Let nothing hinder us,
nothing separate us or nothing come between us.

Your article reminded me of when I was about the 4th grade. A nun called me aside during recess asking me if my family was alright. Did we need food, clothes, etc? She noticed my coat. It was now mine handed down from my sister. I didn't realize how worn down it was. Up to that time of my life, I hadn't thought myself or family as poor. All of the sudden I became so conscious of what my family must have looked like to others, our home and so on. We were/are a large family. I was happy until she brought my "poorness" to my attention. I was happy as it was. I remember our refridgerator being bare but somehow we always had something to eat. We didn't have the latest popular cereal but we had some kind of breakfast food. I didn't mean to bring up the fact that it was a nun who pointed it out to me--it could have been anyone. Wasn't very smart though. If it were really bothering her, she should have talked to my parents not to me is the way I see it. Perhaps she is the one that is poor in that she didn't have the happy experiences or the smartness not to say this to a child.

Thank you for bringing to light the way I feel. Yesterday I learned that my children qualify for reduced lunch at school. It was very humbling. And yet we are only "poor" in contrast to the standards of suburbia. I pray that God will help me to trust in Him and be happy with His countless gifts.

Well You took me back to the night i put all my children to bed without dinner with the assurance that we would eat tomorrow. It was the day food baskets would be given out.......... there wasn't a scrap of food in the house/ not a tablespoon of flour or a pat of butter...... nothing.
And let's pray that the woman who is doing that today will find mercy in the Heart of God to provide for her.
Amen.
