I'd say, "One of the presidential candidates wants to raise your taxes a LOT MORE than the other." Neither of these guys is a cost-cutter.

I just want to take issue with the ethanol comment made in the above story. There is too ways to look at ethanol other than the government subsidy.

First, if we had no ethanol usage at all, our petroleum prices would be an estimated 20 to 50 cents per gallon higher than they already are. Therfore, without ethanol, food prices (due to the transportation costs) would be even higher.

Second, ethanol production uses corn, but produces both ethanol fuel and "GDE's" which is a feed source that is fed to livestock.

The high cost of corn is attributed to many factors and ethanol usage is just one of them. Corn prices are affected many things, including export demand, which is high due to the relatively low value of our dollar. The recent flooding in the corn belt pushed prices up due to a preceived corn production reduction, but the overall corn crop outlook for 2008 is very good as the remaining acres have had sufficient rain and otherwise good growing weather. Over the past two weeks, corn futures prices have decreased significantly.

Therefore, to blame the high cost of food mostly on ethanol, in my opinion, is unfair.
