Titus 2:1

But as for you, teach what befits sound doctrine.

Titus is the last of the pastoral epistles.  “Pastoral epistles” (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) are written to give basic instructions to the shepherds of the Church.  Unlike so many modern people, they do not pit doctrine against personal holiness and ask us to choose.  They insist that a bishop be both orthodox and holy, both firm and loving, both traditional and creative.  What befits sound doctrine is a living, not a theoretical, belief in that doctrine.  Paul demonstrated such a living faith when he died for Christ.  That’s because he believe that the Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  Today, thank God for the many, many shepherds who do indeed lay down their lives for the sheep.
