I've learned (as a convert and re-vert from Evangelicalism) to call a "time out" on the spot, and deal with the objections. For instance, explaining that "pray" comes from the Olde English for "ask"--as in, "pray thee, pass the salt"--will take the wind out of their sails. They've never heard of "worship" or "adoration"; introducing them to the concepts gives us a broader base of communication. On the rare occasions when I get stuck, I enjoy (as in, take too much pleasure) in stumping them with, "You believe in Sola Scriptura, so tell me why you refuse to accept John 6: 48-69?"
