Humanae Vitae has been an obsession with me. I have taken my priest to task for ignoring it (he says it is a subjective, political teaching--right out of the mouth of Fr. Richard McBrien). I have parsed the encylcical for language that is anything but subjective or political. I have presented him with the clear and consistent teachings of the Church since the Shepherd of Hermas in the 1st Century. He merely states that the Chruch for so long condemned sexuality that no one will listen. I pointed out that the Pew study showed the 'evangelical" groups (more sexually conservative) were attracting members, not shunning them! I have not heard an orthodox word on sex and marriage from him in the 10 years I've known him (he even congratulated our organist for getting re-married after her divorce to another divorcee). This is truly a battle, for all of us, that needs to be fought.

Learning about the church's teachings made a huge impact on us while we were well in the middle of our child bearing years.

nezatda
There is good news. Many young people are starting to embrace Natural Family Planning as a viable method for spacing children. You may find it strange that someone with 10 children is a big proponent of Natural Family Planning, but my wife and I used it very succesfully to plan and space our children. We have 5 married children ages 25 to 35 who area ll using NFP. My daughter-in-law actually is a certified NFP instructor. When my wife and I teach Marriage prep classes, about half of the couples say that NFP was the topic that impacted them the most!
The problem is that most Catholics today are not taught anything about NFP. In our parish 60% of the students attend PSR, which ends in the eighth grade.NFP is not mentioned. Only 25% attend a Catholic high school. We are fortunate that the Catholic schools in our area have mentioned NFP. Education is truly needed. I have only heard contraception mentioned once from the pulpit.

nezatda I agree with you. I have a son (21) who one day will get married and start his own family. And my wife and I know that he and his future wife will face hard times. And unfortunately bringing a new life into the world at times like this can make life a bigger challenge. But as I have told him that if and when this happens he can rely on three things to get through these troubled times. 1. Love of Jesus Christ and protection of Our Blessed Mother. 2. His Catholic faith. 3. Love and support of Mom and Dad.

I do feel that the media really promotes contraception way too much. Should not the practice of abstinence get equal billing? If statistics were posted which would show greater success in preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexual diseases? And for married couples why do we not see more information posted for natural family planning?

I feel that the encyclical Humanae Vitae needs to be promoted even more so now than it was 40 years ago. Father Pavone is on the right track (once again) so let's all give him our support!

I would dare to say that most of us in full agreement and commentary are no longer in the child bearing years. The young married couples of today are usually both employed and struggling with all the problems of this profane society. We have to support them with all our love and understanding, reminding them (and us) to trust in the Holy Spirit to guide us in all our decisions.

This is a very basic truth. It's denial is the source of so many evils in our culture since the 60's when the "pill" was first developed.
[If one can contracept, one can be involved with sex outside marriage. If one can separate "sex" from having children, homosexual sex is O.K. too. If you tell children/teen's it's O.K. to have "safe" sex, they won't need to wait for marriage.
"Safe sex" is a lie. It brings "unwanted" pregnancy and therefore - abortion. Promiscuous sex brings the S.T.D. epidemic as well. Contraception has obviously resulted in increased suffering and death.]
We have perverted our children, murdered our grandchildren, and destroyed our marriages. Real families are the foundation of a good society. Now, our laws and "choices" are destroying our future- and we'll answer to God for this. We must get back to God's rules and elect leaders who understand this.

"Many of us see others simply as means to our own advancement or pleasure."
And this is now often seen as the basis for marriage today, with all of it's many sad consequences including divorce, attacks on marriage, population decline, euthanasia, abortion.
