If you listen to the old TV shows, Bishop Sheen never missed a chance to bring in politics by bashing the Communists. For you young folks, this was soooo long ago that Catholics were actually ANTI communist -times have changed. He would not have been able to imagine a future where one of the most left wing advocacy groups in the USA is the USCCB.

Archbishop Sheen was just amazing in his breadth of knowledge and spellbinding delivery. What a vociferous and rivetting soldier for Christ he was. He had to be a saint.

Don't spoil a great article on a future saint by bringing politics into it. We will hear about that ad nauseam in the coming year.

Thats interesting you never were attracted to Sheen, Monica. The first time I happened upon his show one night after coming home from the gym, I sat there (with unblinking eyes) completely amazed someone had that kind of charisma.

"Romney is the only one who can beat Hillary for president. If McCain wins the nomination, say hello to 8 years of supreme corruption. You heard it here first."

Another great inteview and profile. I admit, I've never been much attracted to Fulton Sheen - I don't know why, really - but these kinds of pieces are very helpful in opening the door.

David, I've also read another of your interviews today - the one with ND football coach CHarlie Weis.
