A frugal friend in college would pull a 'price tag' out of a jar before asking someone on a date to determine how much he'd spend. For example, a $1.00 date would be a drive to the beach and kite flying. (That was when gas was cheaper, of course!)

"Splurging" is important. One of my former co-workers dated a guy who refused to go anywhere that wasn't in his coupon book.

I dated a "domestic" guy whose idea of a fun Saturday was grocery shopping and other errands, dinner made at home (guess who set the table, washed the salad and washed the dishes) and several hours watching the History Channel. A Domino's pizza and a Blockbuster movie would have been a welcome change.

He ended up marrying someone else.

Craig and I met at the University of Michigan Ballroom Dance Club, and our first date was a picnic alongside a river with my Border collie puppy, Missy. I knew he was the man for me when Missy lost her ball in the river, and he waded in after it (dropping his pager in the process). Later, when Missy spat her ball over the bridge and back into the water, Craig won additional points by not throwing her in after it. The best part came the following week, when he made a point of replacing the toy (her favorite pink ball) with a duplicate on our next date. It cost all of $3, but it won my heart more effectively than a dozen white roses.

Heidi Hess Saxton Editor, "Canticle" Magazine Blogroll

Excellent points!

My wife and I met through Ave Maria Catholic Singles, and our entire courtship was spent 700 miles apart. When I realized that God could be calling us to courtship and possibly more, I ditched my old credit card and got a Southwest airlines one because that was the carrier that shuttled between our nearest cities. Very quickly it paid for itself and then some!

A long distance courtship is still expensive, but the question I asked myself was: "Am I willing to lose the chance of meeting my future wife because of a few hundred dollars?". Heck no!

Here is our Ave Maria Success Story.

May God bless you in your discernment of your vocation!

My first date with my husband was a dinner and movie date but.... it was a meal at the local Chinese fast food place (several varieties of meals around $10 Can stirfried as you wait and more rice then the average person could eat) and a movie at the local alternative movie place. Not nearly as expensive as the average dinner and movie date.

After that we had a regular date to go to a improv show at the local little theater and share pizza afterwards and I became involved in our university's annual farce with him.

Other fun cheap things were joining certain of the uni clubs together and hosting Games night at our place after we were married (before then we met at the uni for gaming). We were really poor at that point so while we made a meal for everyone we also put out a pot for donations (our fellow university students understood). There are a wide variety of board games for every taste.

My husband and I had a lot of dates similar to those mentioned here, and even now as a married and childless (well, two on the way) couple we still do similar things. Yes, we have our occasional dinners out, but we don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun. One thing we really enjoyed while dating was making a picnic and going to the drive-in.
